Many adults, including teachers, stop reading to children after lower elementary school, sometimes even earlier. A common belief seems to be that reading aloud is the predecessor to silent reading and that once children begin to read silently, we should stop reading aloud to them. This is most unfortunate.

Absolutely, Reagan. Reading aloud is a powerful tool that helps listeners become better readers, writers, and thinkers. Why should we ever outgrow the desire to improve those skills?

I agree, Donna Marie. While I acknowledge the Nook can be convenient for adults to use at times, I think traditional books provide a much richer experience, especially for children.
